This paper makes the argument that meeting the social, environmental and economic needs of communities requires a diversity of business models and service delivery systems. Based on evolving research evidence and research papers, social enterprise is a fundamental component to this complexity.

Supporting the development, growth and success of social enterprises therefore is a central aspect of creating healthy communities. Social enterprises contribute to healthy communities through direct participation in the market and by strengthening non-profit organizations.
